James Clark Davis letters, 1937-1947.

This collection consists mostly of letters written to James' mother, Ava M. Davis. Many are written by James when he was in boot camp, radioman school and on board the USS Indianapolis. There are also letters to James' father, Thomas and his sister, JoAnn. There is a photograph of Robert Findley, friend of James Clark.

The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was commissioned in 1932 and saw extensive combat duty in the South Pacific theater during World War II. After completing a secret mission delivering parts for the atom bomb in July 1945, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine. Biographical note: Supervisor involved in inspecting and vaccinating cattle in Mexico in 1949 as a member of the Mexico-American Commission for the Eradication of Hoof and Mount Disease. James C. Davis was in the navy and on board the USS Indianapolis, CA 35 when it was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine between Guam and Leyte. Of the 1,196 men on board only 316 survived.
